Treasury Department Clears Turning Point USA of Investigation Amid Social Media Fraud Rumors

In a move to counter spreading online allegations, the U.S. Treasury Department confirmed last week that Turning Point USA (TPUSA) and its affiliated organizations are not under any IRS investigation. The clarification came in a letter sent to Erika Kirk, the widow of TPUSA co-founder Charlie Kirk and current leader of the conservative youth group.

The letter addressed concerns raised on social media about potential financial misconduct at TPUSA, including claims of fraud involving millions of dollars. Podcaster Candace Owens and others had publicly urged donors to seek refunds, prompting a small number of small-dollar contributors to request their money back. However, the Treasury Department’s response directly contradicted these rumors.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Erika Kirk requested information from the department the previous Wednesday. The letter stated that none of the four tax-exempt entities she oversees—Turning Point USA Inc., Turning Point Action Inc., Turning Point Endowment Inc., or America’s Turning Point Inc.—are being examined or investigated by the IRS. It also confirmed that all required Form 990 tax filings were submitted on time this year.

A senior Treasury official described the situation as unfortunate, noting that the IRS routinely provides such information upon request from taxpayers. “In this case, it’s hideous that malicious lies and smears obligated her to make the request,” the official said.

TPUSA has strongly denied the allegations. Blake Neff, a producer on “The Charlie Kirk Show” podcast, recently pushed back against claims of financial impropriety. He emphasized that the organization undergoes annual third-party audits, that Charlie Kirk personally approved every expense, and that TPUSA has never missed a Form 990 deadline.

Erika Kirk took over leadership of TPUSA following the assassination of her husband, Charlie Kirk, in September 2025 during a campus event in Utah. The organization, known for promoting conservative activism on college campuses, continues to thrive. Its recent annual fundraising gala at President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida was fully attended both nights, according to a TPUSA representative. Financial disclosures show the group raised $85 million in revenues as of mid-2024.

President Trump has long supported TPUSA, and Erika Kirk has visited the White House multiple times since her husband’s death.

The controversy highlights the challenges of misinformation on social media, especially for nonprofit organizations reliant on donor support. TPUSA’s swift response, backed by official confirmation, appears to have helped quell the rumors.

Erika Kirk is scheduled to discuss these and other topics in an upcoming one-hour town hall moderated by Bari Weiss, set to air on CBS. The event reflects her ongoing efforts to carry forward her husband’s legacy while navigating public scrutiny.
